How to Prevent Cancer? 12 tips to live a healthy life

According to the World Health Organization, each year about 14 million people are diagnosed with cancer and about eight million die from this disease. Like any illness or disease, cancer can occur without warning. Many factors that increase your risk of getting cancer are beyond your control; such as your family history and your genes. However, there also some tips to prevent cancer.

So, any of the more than 250 known cancers have a double causal component: genetic and environmental. In fact, the relationship of the individual to the environment can determine the occurrence of genetic mutations that induce the onset and development of the disease. It is for this reason that a healthy life is the best way to prevent cancer. A balanced diet, exercise and avoid direct contact with chemical agents known to cause cancer.

 

How to Prevent Cancer?

It is scientifically proven and there are studies that clearly demonstrate that there are three factors that help us to prevent cancer: balanced eating, daily physical exercise and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Besides this, it is also true that we have to learn to connect with our bodies and our minds; in order to these changes to happen naturally and sustainably instead of sudden and not being able to sustain them with time.

 #3- Maintain a healthy weight, it’s not only for the looks.

According to researchers of the Washington University School of Medicine, “weight, weight gain, and obesity account for approximately 20% of all cancer cases.” Ideally, you should maintain a Normal Body Mass Index (BMI), which is the relationship of weight to height and is an easy and quick indicator to identify if you have a healthy weight.

To calculate your BMI divide your weight in kilograms between your height in meters raised to the square. Fat accumulated at the abdominal level increases the risk of cancer and other diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.

Dealing with weight loss is much more than the myth of “less calories in and more calories out”. If it was just like that, we wouldn’t be living the obesity epidemic that we are facing right now, isn’t it? So, if diets and exercises don’t work by themselves, what actually works?

Exercise is critical for improving one’s overall health. It is the key to cardiovascular wellness, respiratory productivity and improving your mood. Many people don’t enjoy adding exercise to their daily life and yet, it’s been proven in thousands of studies to both prevent cancer and fight diseases.

A 2009 meta-analysis of 52 epidemiologic studies that examined the association between physical activity and colon cancer risk found that the most physically active individuals had a 24% lower risk of colon cancer than those who were the least physically active.

Also, In a study of over 1 million individuals, leisure-time physical activity was linked to reduced risks of esophageal adenocarcinoma, liver cancer, gastric cardia cancer (a type of stomach cancer), kidney cancer, myeloid leukemia, myeloma, and cancers of the head and neck, rectum, and bladder.

How Should You Exercise?

Doctors recommend to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to have good cardiovascular health. A brisk walk will do it. But there is always space for some more activity, right? Well, it turns out that is not as easy as the popular belief that exercising is just about willpower says.

Without getting into the specifics of any specific available diet, some key recommendations and first steps are:

Many different studies have established a link between the risk of cancer and eating processed meat such bacon, sausages, hotdogs, pepperoni, and salami. Eating about 2 oz. (50 grams) a day of processed meat increases your risk of colorectal cancer by 20%. This could be due to the nitrate preservatives or other substances used in the processing of the meat; although risk factors for cancer also increase by eating red meat, too. The safest strategy is to limit the amount of processed meat you consume and vary your diet by seeking out other protein sources; such as fish, chicken, eggs, nuts, and soy, rather than relying just on red meat. Try to get these protein sources as wild or free-range as possible.

#2- Omega 3’s:

The term “omega-3 fatty acids”; refers to a suite of polyunsaturated fatty acids essential to overall health due to their role in a number of systems and functions of the body. However, the body do not produce omega-3 fatty acids, so you must be acquire them via diet and supplements.

The highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids are inside of coldwater fish; such as sardines, salmon, herring, tuna, cod, mackerel, halibut, and shark. These fatty acids are also in lower concentrations in plant foods such as flaxseed, walnuts, Great Northern beans, kidney beans, navy beans, and soybeans.

A study was by the University of North Carolina’s, looked at data from 1,463 breast cancer patients who had participated in the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP). This study tracked fish and omega-3 fatty acid intake of ALA, DPA, EPA, DHA and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (arachidonic acid and linoleic acid). In 14.7 years 485 people had died, with 210 of these from breast cancer. Those in the group who consumed the most omega-3 foods (in this case, fish) were 25 to 29 percent more likely to survive.

#3- Raw Foods:

Raw foods build the immune system, but many fruits and vegetables also have nutrients that kill cancer cells and/or stop the spread of cancer. While the term “raw food” means food eaten without cooking, in the context of a cancer diet, a “raw food” diet is a vegan type of diet, where the vast majority of fruits and vegetables that are consumed are known to kill cancer cells, directly or indirectly. In other words, to fight cancer, do not use a random selection of uncooked vegetables and fruits, but a very selective subset of vegetables and fruits specifically selected to treat cancer because there are cancer fighting foods that can help you to fight and prevent cancer perfectly.

– Consume 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Variety is the most important, since the nutrients found in let’s say broccoli are different from the ones in an apple. The color is indicative of the sources of nutrients it can provide, so try to include vegetables and fruits in your diet with as many different colors as possible.

– Prefer complex carbohydrates.

Complex carbohydrates such as legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals, so they are more nutritious.  Refined flours tend to raise blood sugar levels, generating more anxiety and alterations in insulin levels, which stimulate the accumulation of body fat. For this reason the ideal is to avoid everything that is refined and high in sugar, such as white bread, white rice, pasta, cookies, pastries, etc.

– Add more spices into your food, a tastier solution for salt

Besides all the medicinal power of many herbs and spices, this by itself will lower the amount of salt you need to use in your food. Sodium is necessary for proper functioning of the body, but excess increases the risk of diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Sodium is present in many other foods such as sausages, canned foods, fast food, processed foods, soups, condiments such as consommé, cubes, sauces, dressings, etc.

– Use more healthy unrefined oils full of benefits, nutrition and energy.

Every time you can use good unrefined organic oils, don’t think about it. Just do it. A couple of amazingly good unrefined oils are coconut and flaxseed oils. Keep them at hand while on the kitchen that the nutritious virtuosity of these two oils are not to be dismissed. Dependence on alcohol and tobacco also is correlated: People who are dependent on alcohol are three times more likely then, those in the general population to be smokers, and people who are dependent on tobacco are four times more likely than the general population to be dependent on alcohol.

People who drink and smoke are at higher risk for certain types of cancer, particularly those of the mouth and throat. Alcohol and tobacco cause approximately 80 percent of cases of cancer of the mouth and throat in men and about 65 percent in women. For people who both smoke and drink, the danger of mouth and throat cancer increases dramatically—in fact, the combined risk is greater than or equal to the risk associated with alcohol multiplied by the risk associated with tobacco. Alcohol and tobacco co-use appears to substantially increase the risk of at least one type of cancer of the esophagus.

Both alcohol and tobacco are two of the biggest causes of cancer. Incorporate as many healthy habits as you can into your life and it will make a much easier way out to any of your addictions.

 

#7- Store food properly.

When food, especially cereals and grains, are stored at room temperature mold is formed, and it can produce a toxin called aflatoxin. Research indicates that it is one of the strongest potentiators of cancer. There many techniques to preserve all your food, but the most common ways to do it are:

 

#1- DRYING

Drying, arguably the oldest food preservation method, is a great way of preserving herbs, fruits, vegetables and meats. To dry herbs, simply tie them together and hang in a sunny spot away from any humidity. To dry fruits or vegetables; set them out on a clean surface and keep them in the sun for a few weeks (this only works well in dry, warm climates). A more modern method of drying is to use an electric dehydrating machine.

However, you can dehydrate your food at home is very easy! There 3 ways to do it, choose what you like the most: The First One Is With Your Oven, just turn it to the lowest setting; cut your fruit and veg into ¼ inch slices, and put them in the oven on a lined sheet pan for as long as they need, usually 6 to 8 hours. If you don’t want to wait this long; you can compromise by bumping the oven up to 225°F, though the results will be a little less traditionally dehydrated.

The Second Way Is With a Toaster Oven, just put the toaster oven on it’s lowest setting and leave the door slightly open to avoid condensation. Keep your eye on the food you’re dehydrating, and you’ll eventually end up with a pretty perfect dried snack. 

Finally The Last One Is With The Sun! Yes, you read it right. With this method veggie, herbs and fruits develop an extra level of sweetness. To do it, just slice them thin, place them on a baking sheet, and leave them in a very sunny spot until they’re perfect, which could take a few days. Be sure to put some kind of mesh material over the food, to keep the flies from getting to it.

 

#2- SALTING

Salting is a subcategory of the drying method. The main difference here is that salt is added to products, mainly meat and fish, to draw out moisture. This lowers the bacteria content and makes food adaptable for later use. Adding salt to animal protein turns it a bit leathery. Popular foods made in this tradition are beef jerky and dry salted cod.

#3- CANNING

In order to can foods, you need heat. Prefer glass jars when canning. The important thing will be to sterilise your equipment in simmering water for a few minutes (this includes lids). Then they will be ready to be filled with things like jam. After filling, place the lid on firmly, but not too tight. To finalise the process lower the jars into a pot full of water, cover and bring to a boil. Process for about 10 minutes. Pull the jars out of the hot water and let cool. They will vacuum seal as they cool. Cooking times vary per recipe.

#4- PICKLING

The main difference between this category and canning is that you need two things for pickling: salt and acid. Pickling requires you soak your produce, most famously cucumbers, in a brine with salt. When they have pickled for the desired amount of time you transfer them to a jar full of vinegar. At this point you can use the canning method to produce a vacuum seal, if you wish.

A bonus of pickling is that it does not change the texture too much. The vegetables undergo a fermentation process, which also results in a vitamin boost. Pickled vegetables are known for having an increased level of vitamin B6.

#5- FREEZING

Freezing changes the texture of most fruits and some vegetables, but meats and fish farewell.  The best way to do this is freeze fruit in batches (the same method would apply to vegetables). For instance, scatter fresh berries on a baking tray and put it in the freezer. After they have frozen solid, put them in a bag. This will avoid clumps of berries that are impossible to separate without thawing.

Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight can cause changes in your skin. Sun rays (UVA and UVB) can damage skin cells. These damaging rays are also found in tanning beds and solar lamps. Sunburns and many years of sun exposure can lead to skin cancer.

To prevent getting a sexually transmitted disease, or STD, always avoid sex with anyone who has genital sores, a rash, discharge, or other symptoms. The only time unprotected sex is safe is if you and your partner have sex only with each other, and if it’s been at least six months since you each tested negative for STDs.

The more sexual partners you have (especially without condom use), the greater your risk of contracting human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer, throat cancer, and penile, vaginal, and anal cancer.

Each CT scan is equivalent to 30 – 442 chest x-rays, depending on the dose used for the CT scan. Unfortunately, there is no established guideline for how much radiation should be used for each procedure. Different scans require different levels of radiation in order to get a clear image, but some doctors are using more radiation than is necessary. One study found that different medical facilities had huge variations in the dose of radiation used for the same procedure. On average, the highest dose given for a CT scan was 13 times higher than the lowest dose given for the same type of scan. Max Gerson was a German Jewish doctor born in 1881 who suffered from migraines so strong that they left him disabled for days in bed. Tired of not finding a solution, he set out to find one. Aware that 80% of the immune system is in the intestine, he first step was to clean it. For that he eliminated all the processed and unhealthy foods, as well as all type of meats. Instead, He replaced them with fruits and vegetables. As expected, soon the headaches disappeared.

What followed was to use their migraine diet with his patients and was surprised when one of them was fully cured from cutaneous tuberculosis. According to the Gerson Institute, coffee enemas have the primary purpose of “removing toxins accumulated in the liver and removing free radicals from the bloodstream.” And it’s not just the caffeine in coffee that is responsible for the benefits of coffee enemas; in fact, studies show that bioavailability of caffeine obtained from coffee enemas is about 3.5 times less than those obtained drinking coffee orally.

When ingested, compounds within coffee either from drinking it or from inserting coffee directly into the colon act like a cathartic that causes the colon muscles to contract. This helps move along stool through the digestive tract; resolving cases of constipation and making it easier to go to the bathroom. Coffee contains caffeine and salts of palmitic acids (kahweol and cafestol palmitate), which are absorbed by the hepatic portal system located in the last section of the colon. The portal veins carry the caffeine and palmitic acids directly to the liver without digestion.

In the liver, kahweol and cafestol act as potent enhancers of glutathione S-transferase which is an important enzyme in the liver. It is part of a major detoxification system that catalyzes the binding of many toxins from the bloodstream to the sulfhydryl group of glutathione so that the toxins can be released into the small intestine and excreted from the body. The caffeine dilates bile ducts and aids the emptying of toxic material from the gallbladder.

  • 1 liter of filtered, mineral or spring water but never with tap water.

  • A strainer with a fine mesh.
